Where once there rattled the wheeled suitcase and the clatter of security trays, there is now only quiet. Doncaster Sheffield Airport, according to the Daily Star, has stood in what the paper calls eerie stillness for four years, since it closed in 2022.

The closure followed a declaration by its then owner, Peel Group, that continued operation was financially unviable. In its working days the Yorkshire airport connected travellers with Alicante, Amsterdam, Budapest, Dublin, Palma and Paphos, via Wizz Air, TUI and Ryanair, the report states, citing the Express.

A photo gallery accompanying the report shows check-in counters with TUI signs still on the walls, shops and cafés closed, luggage carousels at a standstill and runways empty. The paper describes the place as frozen in time, with departure lounges hauntingly silent.

Yet the story is not one of permanent decline. The report describes a £160 million investment and a plan for the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to purchase the airport and become freehold owner and landlord under the City of Doncaster Council's lease. The prospect of public ownership has been hailed as a "major win".

Christian Foster, a director at the airport, is quoted as saying flights could resume next year, freight first, with passenger services on target for Spring 2028. He adds that a full terminal refurbishment and new security equipment lie ahead, and that reopening an airport is not a matter of turning up and switching the lights on.

For the present, the report concludes, the airport remains a ghost of its former self, its final fate still awaiting a definitive decision.
