Voice of Absent Mother Whispers at Bedroom Door; Teenager Keeps Phone Line Open Till Dawn

A Reddit user recounts a weekend alone at 17 that ended with a second voice answering the first, and a door that stayed shut.

Strangeness 3 of 5

A Reddit user posting to the r/Paranormal forum has set down an account of a night spent alone at the age of 17, which the author says still raises chills and which, in the author's words, remains without explanation. The post, published on October 9, 2026, answers the forum's own question about which paranormal experience lingers longest in the memory.

According to the post, the author's parents had gone out of town for the weekend, leaving the teenager in the house by themselves. On the first night, the author writes, they woke at about three in the morning to the sound of someone walking slowly down the hallway. The author's first thought, the post says, was that the house was merely settling, a perfectly respectable theory that was soon put under strain.

Three knocks then sounded on the bedroom door, according to the account. The author states they did not move. A voice followed, which the author identifies as their mother's, whispering a request for her "Sweetheart, open the door." The difficulty, the writer observes, was that the mother was hundreds of miles away.

The author reports taking up a phone and calling their mother, who answered half asleep and confirmed that she was still at her hotel. It was during this conversation, the post states, that something on the far side of the door whispered a question of its own: why was the author calling her, when it was right there?

The author says they remained on the telephone with their mother until sunrise and never opened the door. The post does not say what, if anything, was found in the hallway by daylight, nor does it describe any inspection of the house. No corroboration is offered, and the account rests entirely on the author's recollection.

The post offers no explanation, and the author closes by inviting other readers to share anything paranormal that has happened to them and still cannot be explained. Paranormal Daily notes only that the author's one stated precaution, a steady telephone line and a closed door, appears to have been entirely sufficient.
