Weary Traveller Finds Luxury Smoking Lounge at Heathrow; Room Never Seen Again

A Reddit user recalls a 10-hour layover, a door marked with a sticker, and a chamber of ottomans and free snacks that failed to reappear a month later.

Strangeness 2 of 5

A Reddit user posting to r/Paranormal has described what the author calls a visit to a "room of requirement" at London's Heathrow Airport, an experience said to have occurred 19 years ago and never repeated.

According to the post, the writer was young and exhausted after travelling from the Caribbean with several layovers, hoping to surprise parents by arriving home for Christmas. With some ten hours to wait in Terminal 3 and a strong need for a cigarette, the author searched the long corridors for a smoking area. Smoking rooms of that era, the post notes, were typically small, smelly cells with iron seats.

None could be found until the author spotted a sticker reading "designated smoking area" on a door. Behind it, the writer says, lay the opposite of expectation: a bright, spacious lounge with one wall entirely of glass overlooking arrivals and departures. In place of chairs there were ottomans, each furnished with blankets, pillows, an ashtray table and a charger. A large fridge of cold drinks and a free snack machine completed the scene. Few others were present, and all, the author recalls, seemed equally content. The writer stayed until it was time for the gate.

A month later the author returned to the same terminal and, despite a thorough search, could not locate the room. The author has since quit smoking but says they still look for it on every visit to Terminal 3.

The writer allows that the episode may have been "a glitch in the matrix," noting that smokers did not receive such luxury at the time. The author adds one piece of corroboration: during the visit they phoned others and showed them the surroundings, since no one would otherwise have believed it. The post offers no further explanation.
