HOUSEHOLD MYSTERIES
Homeowner's Mouse Hole Vanishes From Garage Wall After 15 Years of Annual Plugging
A Reddit user says he and his wife both recall the pencil-sized opening, yet neither can now find it.
THE ATTACHED GARAGE — A Reddit user posting to r/Glitch_in_the_Matrix has reported the unexplained disappearance of a small hole in the wall of his garage, a feature he says he has maintained faithfully since moving into the house fifteen years ago.
According to the post, the opening was about the size of a pencil and sat beside a concrete step, above the molding. Each year, the author writes, he and his wife stuffed it with steel wool to keep out mice. The practice, by his account, had served the household well.
The trouble began upon the family's return from an 18-day vacation, when mice were found in the house. The author says he then recalled the hole and went to inspect his steel wool. He reports that the hole was not there. Assuming his memory had failed him, he let the matter drop for the day.
The next morning, the author says, his wife raised the subject of the hole unprompted. After he explained, she examined the wall herself and, he writes, agreed that the hole was gone. Both, according to the post, clearly remember plugging and checking it.
The author notes that the wall is paneling that has been in place "since last century," and offers a tentative mundane thought: someone may once have drilled it for a cable. He then adds, with some doubt, that perhaps no one did. He concludes that he is "glitched."
The post offers no account of how the mice entered, and no explanation for the missing steel wool. Readers are left to weigh a failing memory, a repaired wall, or a more exotic theory, and the mice, it appears, have taken no position.
