Pentagon UFO Papers Tell of Fortified Vault for 'Exotic Material or Tissue'

A digest of commentary on the latest PURSUE document release finds enthusiasts, a skeptic and a lingering question about whether the vault was ever built.

Strangeness 2 of 5

A fresh batch of government UFO records, released under the program known as PURSUE, has set the commentariat to work, according to a digest published by The Anomalist, which draws on a report by Above the Norm News.

The item receiving most attention is a document labeled DOW-UAP-D171, a BAASS Monthly Report from June 2009. According to writer David Freeman, it illustrates plans by Bigelow Aerospace for "a heavily fortified underground vault." The digest notes that no information remains on whether such a construction, or any of the other anticipated project enhancements, was ever realized.

Elsewhere, UnHerd says the new files reopen the mystery of the foo fighters, the unidentified objects that troubled Allied and Axis aircrews in the Second World War. The report argues that official secrecy has done as much to fuel public suspicion as the sightings themselves. It concedes that most UFO reports are fairly easily explained, but concludes the story cannot be dismissed as the product of overactive imaginations and misidentified balloons.

Journalist Ross Coulthart, meanwhile, ponders in a video Q&A whether governments are secretly working with hybrid beings. The digest's author describes the exchange as interesting and, in more than one instance, unsettling.

A note of restraint arrives from a writer at FYI, who argues that one recently described UFO performance falls apart on arithmetic. The piece questions the accuracy of the measurement data and, with it, the event's claimed anomalousness. The digest adds its own caution: a 1997 CIA study, which held that over half of American UFO reports of the late 1950s and 1960s could be explained by secret reconnaissance aircraft, has been seriously challenged.
