Reader Finds Startling Line in 1983 Army Report on Monroe Institute's Gateway Process

A Reddit user asks whether a declassified military assessment quietly warned of encounters with non-corporeal intelligences, and why nobody talks about it.

Strangeness 2 of 5

A Reddit user posting to r/UFOs has drawn attention to a sentence in a document that, according to the post, was written in June 1983 for the US Army Intelligence and Security Command. The report, authored by Wayne M. McDonnel, is titled "Analysis and Assessment of the Gateway Process" and, the author notes, was approved for public release on September 10, 2003.

The line in question, which the poster says appears on page 27 of the report, advises readers to "be intellectually prepared to react to possible encounters with intelligent, non-corporeal energy forms when time-space boundaries are exceeded." The poster calls it "quite a remarkable thing to say."

The author, who says they recently took up the Gateway tapes of the Monroe Institute, points out that the sixth wave of the program, called Odyssey, contains a fourth tape titled Nonphysical Friends. According to the post, the tape teaches listeners to connect with non-human intelligences, and "it apparently seems to be working." The post offers no evidence of this beyond the author's impression.

The poster then puts a series of questions to the community. Is this a pretty big deal? Is too much being read into it? Does the report truly state, openly and 43 years ago, that people who dive into such material systematically meet non-human intelligences at certain levels of focused consciousness? And if so, why has it never reached the wider culture?

The post does not supply any skeptical reading of the passage, and it is not clear from the text whether the sentence is a prediction, a description of the program's own claims, or something else. The author closes by inviting readers to share their own experiences with the Gateway Experience and their views of the report, and links to further material on the tapes and to a starter post on r/gatewaytapes.
