THE BLACK ROOM

Meditator Meets Faint Yellow Figure on Throne in Infinite Dark

A Reddit user asks fellow experiencers to compare notes on an oscilloscope-like presence that appeared during deep meditation and seemed to notice the visitor.

Strangeness 2 of 5

A Reddit user posting to r/Experiencers has appealed for comparable accounts of an encounter that, by the author's telling, occurred a few years ago during an hour-long meditation session and has resisted explanation ever since.

According to the post, the author had been meditating regularly by following the breath and letting thoughts pass. The writer reached a state privately called the "black room," an enormous, dark and possibly infinite space in which awareness of the physical body remained. One session then brought what the author describes as a vortex or portal in the mind's eye.

Beyond it, the post says, was the same blackness, now containing a humanlike figure seated on something like a throne. Neither figure nor seat appeared solid. Both were faint yellow outlines, likened to an oscilloscope image drawn at low frequency. The author could make out no face or clothing, and deliberately leaves uncertain whether a cape or wings were present.

The mood changed, the author writes, when the figure became aware of the observer. The writer felt intimidated, as if trespassing. The figure reportedly stood, approached, appeared to acknowledge the visitor, and then turned away to the right, a cape-like shape moving as it went. Moments later, with eyes still shut, the author sensed another presence in the bedroom and glimpsed a brief shadow-like flicker. Panicking, the author opened their eyes and ended the session, whereupon the sensation vanished.

The author is careful to state the experience was not sought: no astral projection, summoning or contact with a deity was attempted. Nor does the post claim a supernatural entity. It says the writer is open to neurological explanations, naming hypnagogia, autonomous imagery and felt-presence phenomena. An attached reconstruction, made from the author's description, is said to be surprisingly close to memory.

What the author wants, the post says, is comparison before interpretation. Readers are asked to describe the appearance, color, solidity, posture, surroundings and emotional impression of any similar presence, and whether they were meditating, dreaming, awake or otherwise. At press time, this newspaper had no tally of replies.
