Motorist Recounts Half Hour in Blackened Fog on US 287 Near Wyoming Line
A Reddit user says a cross-country move turned eerie when a sudden fog, dark figures and an odd buzzing swallowed the car on the road to Laramie.
US 287, BETWEEN FORT COLLINS, COLO., AND LARAMIE, WYO. — A traveler has asked the denizens of r/Paranormal whether a lonely stretch of US 287 has a reputation for strange happenings, after describing what he calls an unsettling drive that he has been unable to shake for a year.
According to the post, the author, his wife and their roommate were moving from Texas to Nevada in May of 2025. On the second day of a four-day journey, rain and traffic had delayed them, and they hoped to reach a Laramie motel by about 7 p.m. Dusk was falling when they joined the highway.
The writer states that fog lay ahead, and his wife slowed the car. Upon entering it, he says, the world seemed to turn completely black, the windows felt icy despite a warm day, and visibility fell to a few feet. The sky had been light enough to show the silhouettes of trees only moments earlier.
Both he and his wife, the post says, glimpsed what looked like dark figures at the roadside, which vanished quickly. He also reports a sort of buzzing in the air around the vehicle and a shared sense that something was wrong. Though they drove slowly, it felt like hours, he writes; by his estimate the fog lasted about 30 minutes. The party emerged to find the sky still faintly light.
The group, he says, spoke little of it afterward and have not discussed it since. The author concedes he would like to believe it was a freak fog and the fatigue of a nine-hour driving day, but cites a nagging feeling that someone or something did not want them there. He adds that they met no other cars on the entire stretch, which struck him as odd.
He closes by appealing to anyone who knows the area to say whether such episodes are common. At the time of publication, the post's replies were not part of the material reviewed.
