RADIO HOUR
Two Hundred Dollars Buys Couple a Clock That Never Chimes, Except at Night
A garage-sale grandfather clock, once owned by a minister, proves a poor bargain in a vintage radio drama, according to a Weird Darkness listing.
THE AIRWAVES — A grandfather clock purchased for two hundred dollars at a garage sale has caused considerable domestic disturbance, according to a description posted by the Weird Darkness podcast of an old-time radio drama broadcast.
The listing states that Charlie and Charlotte Tucker bought the timepiece, said to have belonged to a dead minister. The seller, it says, swore the clock does not chime, though it struck one as the couple walked past it.
Once the clock is installed at home, the post continues, the air inside its case remains cool and damp. The household cat will not set foot in the house, and the clock begins to strike in the middle of the night.
The story is presented as an episode of CBS Radio Mystery Theater titled "Hickory Dickory Doom," dated February 26, 1979. The listing marks the recording as low quality. It is a work of radio fiction, not a reported haunting.
The episode headlines a retro radio compilation of nearly five hours. Also listed are The Devil And Mr. O, Diary of Fate, Dimension X, Escape and Exploring Tomorrow, among others. Several recordings, the notes say, were remastered or cleaned up for easier listening.
The post does not say whether the Tuckers ever recover their two hundred dollars.
