Quiet Pennsylvania Church Found to Hold Complete Set of Tiffany Windows
St. John's Episcopal in Franklin, a former oil town, is described as one of only seven churches with a full collection of Tiffany Studios glass.
FRANKLIN, PA. — On a quiet back street in Franklin, Pennsylvania, a town once known for the boom of its oil trade, there stands a church whose modest exterior is said to conceal a considerable treasure. According to a listing on Atlas Obscura, the real marvels of St. John's Episcopal Church are found only after one passes through its large wood-and-iron doors.
The listing states that every window in the building was made by the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany. It adds that St. John's is one of only seven remaining churches to possess a complete collection of such windows.
The main sanctuary, the entry says, contains a Rose Window described as the third largest ever created by Tiffany Studios, along with a series of triptychs depicting the life of Christ. The listing also points to other architectural features, among them rare rosewood pews and two detailed mosaics made by the Gorham Art Studio.
Visitors may view the windows Tuesdays through Fridays, from 8 AM to 2 PM, according to the entry. Those wishing a guided tour are asked to telephone the church office at least one week ahead. The listing gives the price as $5 per person, with groups limited to a maximum of 50.
