Hotel Room Tale of Bunker Firefight Near Area 51 Resurfaces on r/UFOs
A former Army sniper's secondhand account of a deadly encounter with three reptilian figures is returned to discussion after a moderation rule was relaxed.
AREA 51, NEV. — A story first told in a Polish hotel room has found its way back onto the r/UFOs forum, where a Reddit user posting to the board has revived a written summary of an account given by former U.S. Army sniper Nick Betts on the Liberty Risk podcast in December 2025.
According to the post, Mr. Betts and a fellow former Ranger were working with an NGO group on a Ukraine war documentary in Poland in 2021. Two older retired veterans of a JSOC-affiliated unit from Fort Bragg were on the team. One of them, called the "storyteller," is said to have described an episode from his time on Quick Reaction Force duty.
The storyteller claimed that his unit was recalled from a local bar, flown without a briefing to a hot desert location, and told in a SCIF that they were at Area 51. A nearby underground installation had reportedly gone silent, and a first response team had also vanished. The second team's task was to breach the facility and neutralize whatever had taken down the first.
The operators' conventional rifles were allegedly taken away and replaced with unfamiliar weapons that fired energy rather than ammunition. Upon entering the bunker, the lead operator was said to have been struck dead in the chest. The survivors returned fire and killed three bipedal beings with mildly reptilian features, who carried the same type of weapon.
The post says the fallen man was cremated and his death recorded as a training accident, and that survivors signed nondisclosure agreements and underwent biometric scans. The next morning, according to the account, the second veteran grabbed Mr. Betts by the neck when the subject came up. Mr. Betts and his partner were reportedly dismissed from the project within hours and flown home. He is said to have felt the loss of paid work made it hard to treat the tale as a barroom joke.
The poster argues the account deserves attention, likening Mr. Betts to David Grusch as a secondary source relaying what a primary participant told him. The post concedes that earlier commenters dismissed it as a stranger's bar talk. No independent corroboration is offered, and the storyteller remains unnamed.
